Once, when flying to a treeplanting site in the East Kooteneys, our helicopter got lost. Not really lost, but we just couldn’t find the site. So we flew around the mountains for about an hour. The helicopter was at just the right height and distance from the mountains, and I saw them as I had never seen them before. The mountains appeared as perfectly crafted miniatures. The experience left an impression on me that I have not been able to shake since. I have spent years creating miniatures, portraits of various mountains, bits of landscape, buildings and other sites, hoping to re-created the experience that I had in those mountains. Stalking an iceberg also has influenced my work. Recently I spent a bit of time walking and crawling through lava tubes. That experience affected me deeply.
